Gov. Mark Sanford has put out the above two-plus-minute web-only ad that hits all the main points of his argument that South Carolina’s drunk driving laws need an overhaul.
The Republican governor on Monday released an Internet video that features eye-opening statistics involving alcohol-related driving deaths. One stat says one-third of DUI arrests are repeat offenders.
The video also shows the mother of a 5-year-old boy talking about her son, who was killed by a drunken driver in 2005.
The video says there are too many loopholes in the state’s laws. It urges viewers to contact their state senator and encourage the to pass stronger DUI laws. [The State]
I certainly understand what’s he’s calling for here, and I mostly agree this is a noble idea. But as someone with absolutely no law enforcement experience, it seems to me we need stricter laws and more enforcement. The last thing I want this to turn into however is another issue that gets exploited — by anyone — for use as fodder in the war between Sanford and the General Assembly.
Governor Sanford cares little about DUI ‘policy. But his people read polls, and he loves to play to the polls.
So expect nothing to come from this, other that Sanford comes out looking good. But of course, that is all he cares about, so he will be happy.
And the taxpayer gets stuck with the bill for his play.
The fact of the matter is Sanfraud fired Campbell without cause to gain control of the Ports Authority Board, plain and simple.
Campbell should be reinstated on the Board.

my daughter was MURDERED by two underage drunk drivers AND the 3 adults that provided alcohol to MINORS. NO ONE WAS EVER CHARGED IN THE DEATH OF MY CHILD. i have been ignored for FIVE years now by the state of SOUTH CAROLINA to pass “kelli’s law” i bet no one reading this is even aware that our state highway freakin patrol does NOT carry a field breathalyzer device like every other state in the nation. and people wonder why SC is 3rd in the NATION for DUI fatalities?!!!!!!!!!!! DRUNK DRIVING IS A VIOLENT CRIME AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH! please go read the comments on youtube and please see kelli’s videos.
