When The State newspaper endorsed Barack Obama in Saturday’s Democratic presidential primary, there were certainly a few people who disagreed. The vast majority of those people, like me, did so as a result of overwhelming ideological differences.
But apparently, there were some people who didn’t like the endorsement because of Obama’s skin color. Like this bumbling baffoon, who called the paper to say he is “ashamed that we have a black operation supporting black candidates”:
Fortunately, this moron is largely the exception in South Carolina. Although he is certainly helping to perpetuate the stereotype.
Here’s a transcript, courtesy of The State’s editorial page editor Brad Warthen:
“… I need to talk with someone to discuss the fact that y’all are supporting a black man for president of the United States. I am ASHAMED that we’ve got a newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, one of the best cities in America, and yet we’ve got a black operation supporting black candidates, that doesn’t have any more sense of being president of the United States than I do. He may be educated with a college degree, but let me tell you one thing: He has no common sense whatsoever, or you don’t either. And if you feel like calling me, go to it, girl [the message was left on our publisher's assistant's line]. I am disappointed and upset that we’ve got a black newspaper right here in the city of Columbia.”

Takes me back to Maurice Bessinger’s theme song when he ran for office.
well I am originally from Old Fort Tennessee and there are no blacks there what so ever and I was never exposed to a person of color until I was thirteen years of age. I have nothing against a person of color regardless of how I was raised. I feel that Obama does not have the experience nor qualifications that are required this day and time to lead this country forward. I would have no problem with voting for someone such as Colin Powell that have the neccessary experience to deal with Islamic extremists and foriegn affairs as well as the day-to-day responsibilities of the presidency. Obama has nothing but a hand full of dreams and aspirations a president this does not make.
And the caller ID on that phone call said: “Hillary Campaign HQ.”
Wait… you waste space with ONE phonecall and then title the piece “Bigotry Still Alive and Unwell in SC?” What’s the point here - that one person speaks for all white people in the state? THAT’s bigoted!
