What is already shaping up to be the lasting story of the 2008 South Carolina primary, what The State’s Brad Warthen is calling “our own Palm Beach foulup,” is the massive failure of the Election Systems & Software (ES&S) voting machines in the Grand Strand and reports that voters are being turned away in droves.

In South Carolina, we use the ES&S’s iVotronic machine, which has been banned in Ohio and Colorado. The state election commission recently told the AP that it had reviewed those state’s reports and said they “remain confident in the security and accuracy of SC’s voting system.”

Humble pie, anyone?

Ironically, I recently asked Dan Rather — who released the above documentary last summer on the problems with the voting machines — if he thought we were ready for this year’s primaries. He immediately and prophetically stated “no.” It looks like we should have paid a little more attention to Mr. Rather.

How anyone could be confident trusting their vote to a machine that produces no physical backup is beyond my comprehension.

There don’t seem to be any benefits to using machines vs. paper ballots in primaries where no precinct is going to need to count more than a few thousand votes. I don’t think the loss of verifiability is worth it.

A classic move from the Dem playbook, John is trying to extend voting hours on a ******* Saturday…
I hope they do get extended so he will once again have to dig his own grave in SC.

Ohio has not banned these machines. Ohio’s Secretary of State has recommended replacing them but they are still legal in Ohio.

Sounds like MSM is starting out early to de-ligitimize anyone’s win; unless it’s their darling Shrillary.

I do have to agree with Bill A, if there is no paper trail, how will we ever know? Stirs up a whole new hornet’s nest of controversy to come.

I have to say, it took me 3 tries to register my vote yesterday. The first try went to the candidate beside, the next went to the candidate above. It gives you the chance to confirm, but still that’s not a big confidence booster.

[...] But that doesn’t change the fact that the machines still failed, regardless of who or what caused it.  Folks, Dan Rather was right. [...]
