I’ll admit my coverage of late has been fully consumed by presidential primary stories. But with only hours left until one of the most important days in this state’s history, I wouldn’t think of missing any of it. So naturally, I didn’t write anything about last night’s State of the State address delivered by Gov. Mark Sanford.
Thankfully, our friend Earl Capps had a great write-up with all the details.
Throughout his speech, Governor Sanford presented a number of recommendations we liked and may endorse here at the Blogland, such as restructuring, tougher DUI laws, Workers’ Compensation reforms, spending restraints and budget reforms.
Bringing in multi-media tools to enhance his presentation was definitely smart stuff, including You Tube, a fave of us new media types.
But the disappointing part of the night was his attempt to link opposition to restructuring to racism, through discussing the roots of the present state government structure in the racist, post-Reconstruction legacy of Ben Tillman’s State Constitution of 1895.
We’re ashamed as anyone else could be that this state ever attempted to institutionalize racism, as Tillman did through establishing the present system of government. While we don’t support the continuance of the Tillman structure in state government, we disagree with the governor that this has anything to do with Tillman or racism. [EARL CAPPS - The Blogland]
I have to hand to Earl, he did a pretty good job of turning a boring speech aimed at outlining Sanford’s national ambitions into a moderately interesting story. Hats off to yo, Mr. Capps.

As you have been covering the recent happenings with this election, I thought you might be interested in a film titled: “Article VI: Faith, Politics, America” (quite thought provoking). The film was directed by Bryan Hall and Jack Donaldson. It is an intense discussion of the role of faith in politics. The title is taken from Article Six of the United States Constitution: “no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.”
They are having a few complimentary viewings this Friday for those in South Carolina, Jan 18. The film will be showing On-Demand in the Greenville Market, no cost associated! The film will be broadcast on WJNI-TV 52 at 3:30 pm and 5 pm. The Film will also be broadcast on Knology Cable Channel 44 at 3:30 pm and 5 pm. Finally-the film will be live streaming on http://www.article6themovie.com, no cost associated with any of these.
Hopefully you can see it.
There’s been an undercurrent among NAACP radicals who think they should have gone after the Tillman monument instead of the Confederate flag. Sanford is exploiting them at the hands of cultural Marxism. You should have seen Gilda Cobb eating up that stuff, grinning ear-to-ear. In reality, Sanford’s moving for a new constitution that could be racially controversial if he’s trying to do something that’s actually real and tangible about cracking down on illegal immigration. Sic Willie is right that the McCain-loving SC legislators aren’t really doing anything meaningful about it. If they tried, La Raza Lindsey would call the bigots.
Tim, there’s nothing radical about removing the statue of that man from the State House grounds. I mean, really – he called for the lynching of blacks from the floor of the Senate.
thats the same tie he wore when he won the first elcection in 02
Harden Gervais, Yes, I agree, with some qualifications. During the Confederate flag battles of the ’90s, I encouraged the people I knew in the NAACP to go after the Tillman monument instead. They did, but their voices never reached the upper echelon of the NAACP leadership. Now, granted, there’s not a speck on the Tillman monument that any inspection of it would find to be racist, but that’s because he did so many other good things for South Carolina during that difficult period that surpassed in public importance what is now a verifiably insane obsession with political correctness. In other words, anti-racism is far more dangerous (and akin to racism) than anti-anti-racism. Now there’s a mouthful from someone who openly admits that I’m one of the world’s biggest nerds. But that’s why we have the La-Raza-NAFTA-Superhighway Lindsey. My point on this issue: The NAACP is and always has been morally bankrupt. They were always an NYC establishment movement, instead of being genuine, such as in pockets where even Nathan Bedford Forrest (the former Whig) spoke for the Tennessee black activist predecessor to the NAACP. But the NAACP always asks for an inch (the flag on the dome, the Tillman monument, etc), but then they want a mile and 400 acres and 6 mules (the flag by the Confederate monument, etc, etc). Get ready for a circus on Monday when Hitlery and Osama will be giving speeches on the State House steps and competing to see who can HATE the flag the most. That’s why I’m part of the rEVOLution.
The State newspapers “only” investigative reporter has been working on this story for weeks. Now, he breaks it just in time for Mark Sanford’s speech…and in time for the legislative season.
The State, a tree killing waste of time if there ever was one, is guilty of egging on pointless racial disharmony. They pass by fraud, waste and abuse…for Tilman.
They let Sanford raise 4 million dollars of “secret” money from out of state rich people that he stashes in nonprofits , and they say nary a word. They don’t even ask what Sanford did to EARN the 4 million from his out of state “buddies”.?
If SC does not get a functioning press, we will be destined to remain a near 3rd world country forever.
