A pair of daily South Carolina newspapers announced their endorsement of John McCain in his bid to win the Republican presidential nomination and this state’s primary. The Charleston Post and Courier and Rock Hill Herald Thursday joined The State, the Greenville News and the Myrtle Beach Sun News in backing the Arizona Senator.

The Post and Courier encouraged voters to “give McCain the victory he deserves”:

Not only has the senator continued to live up to the “straight talk” theme of both campaigns, he has provided the country with positive leadership in critical areas. Well known for an independent streak that has led to deviations from the party line, John McCain mainly reflects mainstream conservative values, as evidenced by his calls for less government regulation and a reduction of federal spending, his opposition to tax hikes, his advocacy of Social Security and Medicare reform, his push for an overhaul of the tax code, and his support for a strong defense.

It is in the latter area that the senator, a former Naval aviator who survived more than five years in captivity in Vietnam, where he suffered physical and mental torture, has been the most effective. His was the knowledgeable voice that got the administration’s and nation’s attention when he spoke out on what was going wrong with the war in Iraq. He also was among the earliest and most steadfast supporters of Gen. David Petraeus’ successful ’surge’ strategy. [Charleston Post and Courier]

The Herald found McCain to be “the best candidate in Saturday’s GOP primary”:

McCain, though he occasionally bucks the party line, is reliably conservative on most issues. He has been a supporter of the Iraq War from the start, although he has taken issue with how it was prosecuted. He also was an enthusiastic supporter of the recent troop surge and has committed to remaining in Iraq for as long as necessary to establish a secure government there.

McCain is a fiscal conservative who wants to end federal earmarks and control spending. Although he took heat for initially opposing the Bush tax cuts, he now favors extending them. [Rock Hill Herald]

It may be a little hasty to say this, but at this point it seems like McCain is going to be endorsed by every newspaper in the state.

Reporters like McCain – no surprise there. Hell, if we were covering McCain, we’d endorse him, too. Unlike other politicians, who generally act like pricks toward journalists, McCain actually treats his beat reporters with respect.

I am a proud veteran of our great country, so I respect Jonn McCain for his service to our country. However, he is not the strong tiger on national security everyone thinks he is. I mean the man would not even consider water-boarding a terrorist to get info that could save countless American lives; a terrorist now, not a uniformed soldier fighting in a specific country’s army. His argument against it is if we did, then the enemy would start torturing our soldiers. Start? John, let’s look at the facts. Our enemies are already cutting heads off, hanging and burning bodies, dragging them behind vehicles, and God knows what else. Look at all the tortue rooms found. Surely he knows this is going on, so what is really the true story on his position?

When it comes to illegal immigration, all you can say is his true stance and past history in dealing with this issue is dismal.

Taxes? I know he was against the Bush tax cuts even though it put some money back into my pocket, along with several million other people. Some say there were no spending cuts to go with them. Well, all I can say is a large portion of that money was poured back into the economy through consumer spending.

Well, then you’ve got Mike Huckabee with his record on illegal immigration, higher taxes and bigger government, and belief that our foreign policy is arrogant instead of necessary. Plus now he’s been bragging in Michigan about his close ties to the unions. It does all kinda sound like something a Democrat would campaign on.

You know, I have to put my trust for the future of our national security in a man who speaks with substance, who stands on his principles, who looks you in the eye and tells you straightforward what’s on his mind. Fred Thompson is this man. He’s well thought out, a great communicator, and rock solid on his principles. Go to Fred08.com and look around at his white papers and speeches to make up your own mind. Then tell me who you think should lead us through these dangerous and uncertain times as President and Commander-in-Chief for the next 8 years, Fred Thompson.

big surprise. So many newspapers, probably including all of those, endorsed Bill Clinton in the ’90s, that back then, it was considered baggage if a Republican got a newspaper endorsement.
