Huckabee LA Times

CNN’s Peter Hamby is reporting on an anonymous flier attacking presidential candidate Mike Huckabee that was circulated at a Saturday campaign event in Greenville.  The leaflet, which is similar to one distributed in Iowa earlier this week, takes aim at Huckabee’s record as governor of Arkansas as well as his role in the release of a Wayne DuMond — a convicted rapist who killed a Missouri woman while on parole.

Under the banner, “Mike Huckabee – a ‘True’ Conservative?,” the flier blasts Huckabee on immigration and taxes, and accuses the former Arkansas governor of “lying” about his role in the Wayne Dumond parole controversy. [...]

Although the flier says it is sponsored by a group called “Lynchburg Christian Students for the Truth,” a web search of that name did not return any results. The flier also included an email address offering to provide “court records on the Dumond trial,” but emails sent to that address were not returned. [...]

Both fliers are simple 8×10 printouts with bullet points attacking Huckabee’s record, with particular focus on the Dumond case.

“Don’t fooled by his smooth rhetoric!,” the Iowa flier proclaims. Similarly, the South Carolina flier reads: “Don’t be fooled by that smooth voice!”

The flier urges “those who want to learn more” to contact Betsy Hagan of the Arkansas Eagle Forum and includes her phone number. Hagan opposes Huckabee’s presidential bid.  [PETER HAMBY - CNN]

The campaign of Sen. John McCain has already denounced the fliers, and I expect most of the other candidates to do the same.  But someone was behind this, and it was someone who feels threatened by Huckabee’s recent surge in the early voting states.

I’m not going to speculate on the culprit because there’s no solid evidence that any one campaign is behind the dirty tactics.  But I swear I’ve been seeing a recent wave of very similar attacks somewhere else.

Adam, Your boy knows just as well as anyone that the only ones kicking you in the rear are the ones behind you. Looks as if Warren and the gang are feeling a little threatened.
Tim, I hear Mitt is looking for a new lawn service, you know just in case you need some cash come February.

Why is it a taken for granted conclusion that someone’s campaign is behind this?

Anyone with 5 minutes and a printer can google search the blemishes that compromise Huck’s career as govenor and print them out in bullet point form.

It might even be someone who doesn’t like seeing rapists get paroled; there are still some people like that in this state I do believe.

    Warren Tompkins is scum.

In a just world he would be going broke…but in our dishonorable, one party Republican state of South Carolina…he grows rich. We have lost our way and do not deserve to be in authority.

I am ashamed to be a republican.

[...] We can also assume that every attack on Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith is from the McCain camp.  Why?  That’s Quinn’s logic. They say because we hit Huckabee on our blog, we are responsible for all the other hits about Huckabee’s past. [...]
