The State reports that hundreds turned out Tuesday at Columbia’s First Baptist Church to remember former Gov. Robert E. McNair, who died Saturday at age of 83 from complications of a brain tumor.

“He governed us wisely and led us through difficult years by his calm determination,” University of South Carolina history professor Walter Edgar told about 500 mourners in First Baptist Church. “He gave willingly and freely of his counsel to his successors, regardless of party because he was first and foremost a South Carolinian.”

A private family burial with full military honors was to be held for the Navy veteran at Ballsdam Plantation in Berkeley County later in the day.
