Mpho Phalatse Might Lose Out As Multi-Party Coalition Falters

Coalition and even the collapse of the same are nothing new in the world of politics. Around the world, we see that play out again and again. It has just happened in South Africa as talks of a coalition among three opposition parties in the Rainbow Nation have collapsed.

ActionSA, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Patriotic Alliance (PA) couldn’t reach an agreement for a multiparty coalition in the city of Johannesburg, which means that the spectre of a motion of no confidence now looms against the current mayor, Mpho Phalatse.

A motion of no confidence could see Mpho Phalatse, a member of the DA, lose her position. But if the three parties could join forces in the city of Johannesburg they could succeed in staving off a motion of no confidence against her.

Actually, there was an original proposal among the parties, and they all agreed to it. However, divisions arose after the DA reportedly branded the PA as corrupt. Action SA had expected that the DA would honour their universal agreement.

That didn’t happen. This means that in more senses than one, Mpho Phalatse is at risk of losing her position with a passing of a no-confidence vote on her – something that is possible if the Johannesburg coalition falls apart.
