SOMEONE WAKE UP ARTHUR BRANCH
GREENVILLE, S.C. (TPS) – The Greenville News was a little late on the story, but the chancellor of Bob Jones University, Dr. Bob Jones III, has thrown his support behind presidential hopeful Fred Thompson Mitt Romney. Although the endorsement doesn’t carry the same weight it did in previous years, it is still quite shocking that the leader of a fundamentalist Christian university in the heart of the very-religious Upstate is backing a Mormon over an entire field of Christians.
Asked whether Romney’s religion was a stumbling block for him, Jones replied, “What is the alternative, Hillary’s lack of religion or an erroneous religion?
“As a Christian I am completely opposed to the doctrines of Mormonism,” he said. [RON BARNETT - Greenville News]
So this raises a couple of rather significant questions.
Where the hell is Fred Thompson’s South Carolina campaign? As a conservative Southern Christian, this endorsement should have been less than a two minute phone call away. Heck, the campaign could have had a chimp call and say “ooh ooh ooh ahh” and Jones would have immediately jumped on board. Yet he took a pass on Thompson.
We’re also wondering why Thompson’s biggest Palmetto State backer, Rep. Gresham Barrett, failed to deliver? BJU is in Greenville — the hub of the neighboring Congressional District — and Barrett is incredibly well-respected throughout the Upstate.
What will be the impact of this endorsement? It’s hard to tell. But it shows that Thompson is having a great deal of difficulty in South Carolina. Either that, or he’s still napping.

“backing a Mormon over an entire field of Christians”
LOL. Are you for real?
“Lol”.. Beside Romney what republican is not a Christian?
Hey Mussells,
If you consider that your so-called “Mormon” is arguably the most moral candidate of the bunch*, then Jones’ endorsement isn’t so surprising. In fact, look for other evangelicals to follow suit.
Fewer divorces than McCain, Thompson, or Giuliani. Healthy relationships with his kids. Claims to actually read the Bible. Most Christians might not see eye-to-eye with the “Mormon,” but they probably share more common beliefs than the others.

*Candidates with an actual shot of winning the Republican primary. And McCain.
Once again the Scoop misses the story:
“What will be the impact of this endorsement? It’s hard to tell. But it shows that Thompson is having a great deal of difficulty in South Carolina.”
or perhaps the impact of this endorsement will be that Mitt Romney gets a huge boost in South Carolina and the only issue holding him back–his religion–becomes that much less of an issue.
But then again, when was the last time the Scoop said anything nice about Mitt Romney……..
Never.
Bob Jones University is soooo [expletive] up that i even had an affair with my staff
