David Carr wears white gloves

We must admit that we didn’t watch any of the Carolina Panthers’ preseason games because, well, preseason football is about as exciting as Olympic kayaking. So we were curious today when, during the game against the Atlanta Falcons, Panthers’ quarterback Jake Delhomme was sidelined with an injury to his throwing arm and backup David Carr entered the game — wearing shiny white gloves.

David Carr's white gloves But as the Rock Hill Herald’s Darin Gantt found out, Michael Jackson and Mickey Mouse jokes aside, there’s actually a pretty good reason.

Carr said he started experimenting with the gloves a few years ago, fiddling around during the offseason. He only wore them in a game once, citing weather, and said he’s glad he took the time to get used to them before.

“You get good grip with it, you don’t have to lick your fingers and tell the defense you’re throwing the ball every time you walk to the line of scrimmage,” he said. “I feel like I have better security with the football in the pocket. A lot of the same reasons receivers wear gloves. It really, and why a lot of quarterbacks don’t do it, initially you don’t have the same touch on the football. That’s why, for a long time, I didn’t wear in game.

“It can make a big difference if you’re used to it. I’d say if you’re just jumping into it in the middle of the season, it would be a bad idea. You are going to lose some feeling, some touch, in the throws and some of the short intermediate throws. But it feels good now, I feel natural with it.”

Now the only choice he has to make is which color.

He wore black ones through camp, when he was sporting a red jersey, and had the same ones in Philadelphia when the team wore blue. He joked that he switched to white gloves last week when he found out they’d be wearing that color against the Patriots.

“I had the white jersey on, so I put the white gloves on just for fun, a little bit of fashion too in there,” he cracked.

Wide receiver Steve Smith was chiding him though, telling Carr they looked: “a little effeminate.” [DARIN GANTT - Rock Hill Herald]

Umm… okay.

Not only does Carr sound like a 7-year-old when he speaks, but he’s WAY too into those gloves. We’re with Smith here; Carr deserves to be made fun of for this. A lot.

And if he thinks a pair of magic gloves will prevent him from continuing to be the biggest quarterbacking let-down in the NFL since Ryan Leaf, then he may want to consider laying off the Jack Black movies.

  1. Peyton Manning would have been no good behind that offensive line in Houston. They used an expansion draft pick on Tony Boselli, with the intention that he would be their stud left tackle. But he had an injury, apparently, and I don’t know if he ever really even played for the Texans. I’ve heard some things about whether the Jaguars knew he was hurt and that’s why they exposed him to the expansion draft in the first place.

David Carr isn’t a bust on the same level as Ryan Leaf. In fact, David Carr played really well - statistically - last year.

I don’t know - I like this site, but maybe you should stick more to politics because you seem to be off a bit on your sports analysis.

  2. We said Carr was the biggest bust SINCE Ryan Leaf. “SINCE” does not mean “on the same level as.”

  3. [...] Forty-three may not sound that old, but in the NFL it’s pushing it considering you’re facing 20-year-olds with warp speed and superhuman strength. Anyway, Testaverde (who if you were to insert “cle” in the middle of his name would become “Testacle-verde,” he-he) was signed this week by the Panthers because their starting quarterback is out for the season and their back-up quarterback is a possible cake boy who wears white gloves. [...]

  4. Good move for David to make the switch to the white gloves.
Still.. he is an inept weak QB and will never amount to squat.
He turned out to be a huge bust in Houston.
He cares way to much about his pretty boy image. Remember in Houston when he went with the long hair for a little while and then made a huge deal about it when he got it cut. David, no one cares about your hair or your classy white gloves. Why don’t you stand back in the pocket and take a few more sacks while you are at it. You made us Houstonians suffer with your inept play for so long. Its so refreshing to see you having the same exact struggles just with another team. Its pathetic when the Panthers opt to play Vinny (40 plus year old QB) over David. Thats gotta be a big moral boost. THANK GOD HE HAS LEFT HOUSTON!!

  5. David Carr put up some good statistics considering the ineptitude of the Houston Texans. Calling him a bust is a gross overstatement. If he had a solid supporting cast in Houston, he most likely would have been a successful N.F.L. quarterback. I remember a couple of former N.F.L. quarterbacks who struggled and were even benched at one time; but their fortunes turned for the better, once they got a better supporting cast. Do the names Terry Bradshaw and Phil Simms mean anything to you? If the Giants ever lose Eli Manning to an injury, they will most likely be thankful that they signed him as a backup.
