Dan Hoover of the The Greenville News has picked up on an interesting mail promotion staring Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker who has been rumored for months to be eying a White House run. Also featured in the promotion is an endorsement from none other than Sen. Jim DeMint. DeMint of course, is the most noteworthy Mitt Romney backer in South Carolina.

So why the endorsement? Here’s Hoover’s take:

DeMint (1) knows that Gingrich won’t run or (2) strongly suspects he won’t or (3) wants a hedge, he’s risking putting himself in a bind, having promoted a potential candidate who could wreak havoc on Romney’s already none too strong chances in South Carolina.

But perhaps, like some of us, in the back of his mind there are recollections of Newt the author always having something going on when he’s hawking his latest book, just like he did on Fox News this morning before he launched into the presidential tease. [DAN HOOVER - Greenville News]
