OK, maybe “ponder” isn’t the right word because Spartanburg County Republican Party chairman Rick Beltram doesn’t really “ponder” anything, he just acts with reckless aggression.
So, once we caught wind – albeit a little late – that he may run for the District 13 state senate seat were Jim Ritchie to step down and run for governor, we couldn’t help but give a half-hearted laugh. We say “half-hearted” because it’s that same laugh we all gave Britney Spears last night at the MTV Video Music Awards during her awkwardly terrible “performance” of an awkwardly terrible “song”; the laugh where our emotions are torn between raucous humor and downright pity.
Not only has Beltram lost control of his county’s party, but it appears folks in the Upstate have grown tired of his antics. And worse yet, presidential candidate Fred Thompson, who snubbed the Upstate during the original version of his planned announcement tour but reworked the schedule to accomodate the largest GOP base in the state, has now shunned Beltram and Spartanburg in favor of neighboring Greenville County.
Things are spiraling out of control for Beltram, and although he’s never been our biggest fan, we can’t can’t help but feel sorry for the guy.
But as long as he doesn’t get on stage in front of millions of people in his underwear and lethargically lip sync “Gimme More,” he’ll at least have his dignity.

I wonder if the Governor will run someone against him.
That is the thing about having a libertarian as governor…pertty much all republicans are too liberal for him.
Scoop:
Too bad that your information is so faulty!
1) I worked with the Thompson camapign to arrange for the Marriott. It is on the County line and made a better place for an “Upstate event”. If you noticed in the Greenville New video clip…..it was me that had a reserved seat next to Jeri Thompson.
2) We have a future date for FRED for Spartanburg only.
3) Too bad that you do not understand the strategy for the Ritchie deal
4) We raised $108,000 in 2006 for the Spartanburg GOP……lost control?
5) We have had almost 40 Presidential visits since 02/2005…..no county can come close!
6)I realize that your posts are just for fun…..but do not take your “scoops” too seriously!
Thank you for the mention!
