We wrote a few months ago about the “World’s Largest Sandcastle” built in Myrtle Beach sponsored by the area chamber of commerce. Well now, the man who holds the current record is trying to have it disqualified.

Ed Jarrett, from Casco, Maine, said the 43-foot (13-meter) castle built in June in Myrtle Beach failed to follow Guinness World Records guidelines that ban using machinery and require the structure to be taller than it is wide.

“Myrtle Beach doesn’t meet the criteria,” Jarrett said. “You can’t just pile up a bunch of sand, build a small castle on top of that pile, and call it a record.”

He said his nearly 32-foot (10-meter) tall castle, completed last weekend in Maine, should be the new record holder.

Myrtle Beach officials had permission from Guinness to stray from the guidelines, said Holly McMillan, a spokeswoman for the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s unsafe to have a structure that tall without a base to support it, and Guinness recognized that,” McMillan said. “We also told Guinness that the city would not allow us to hand deliver the sand, and they said it would be OK to use machinery to bring the sand castle in.” []

This guy’s just mad that his puny little 32-foot pile of sand would barely fill a wing in the Myrtle Beach behemoth. You lost, get over it.

I see a big pile of sand with a relatively little castle on top. I think the guy has a point.

Look at the one in maine:

It’s much more impressive. The whole height is castle and it’s got a moat.

Plus the counter arguments are pretty weak. “Oh but the city would only let us use machines!” How convenient.
“It would be dangerious otherwise!” Plenty of other guiness world records are dangerious; thats part of the fun.

Oh wait, hang on while I go make a 14 meter pile of sand and sculpt one parapet. Then the record is mine.

    Bill,

The S.C. sandcastle actually goes all the way to the ground, we just put up an early pic.

    See more photos.

So South Carolina and Maine, neck and neck at the bottom of the SAT race, are reaching new heights in sandcastles?

    Nothing could be finer.

Why did Guinness make that rule in the first place if people don’t have to abide by it? This guys sounds like a sore loser, the Myrtle Beach crew asked them to bend the rules for them and they said O.K., it’s their contest they can say it doesn’t even have to be made out of sand if they like.

The only reason Maine has a such a low sat score is they require all hs students to take the sat. I wonder what would happen if every hs student in sc took the sat.
