We’ve noted before that health care, while not exciting enough to gain a great deal of attention during national elections, is an incredibly important issue.
And we’re glad to see that presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani is highlighting health care as part of his campaign.
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani on Tuesday offered a consumer-oriented solution to the nation’s health care woes that relies on giving individuals tax credits to purchase private insurance.
Critical to Giuliani’s plan is a $15,000 tax deduction for families to buy private health insurance, instead of getting insurance through employers. Any leftover funds could be rolled over year-to-year for medical expenses. [HOLLY RAMER - Washington Post]
We can’t necessarily endorse all of Giuliani’s proposal because he hasn’t really released much about it, but we like it’s direction. And it’s a good start that we’re at least talking about health care.
Estimates from Cover the Uninsured suggest that up to 20 percent of South Carolinians are uninsured at a cost of nearly $2000 per uninsured individual.

It’s crucial to note that this plan is very much a recycled plan, comparable to the plan put forward by President Bush not long ago. The Giuliani healthcare plan is addressed in yesterday’s report on Political Lunch:

I’m happy to see any of the leading candidates take on healthcare in a meaningful way, but Rudy hasn’t yet proven to me that he is a leader in that arena.
