Barrett for Governor?

Congressman Gresham Barrett is making his first move toward running for governor in 2010 by sending out an anti-immigration mailer. This is noteworthy because it was sent to a number of people WELL OUTSIDE of his northwest South Carolina Congressional district, including folks in Richland and Lexington counties. Barrett’s effort raises the obvious question, “why send a mail piece from your Congressional office OUTSIDE of your district if you weren’t planning on running for something higher - like governor?”

If he does plan to run for governor though, he faces an uphill battle. Among others, Attorney General Henry McMaster and House Speaker Bobby Harrell are rumored to be interested in the post. Both men are well-loved across the state and, were either of them to run, Barrett would be toast.

Here’s the four-page mailer which included a quaint little, straight-to-the-point, “Do you like me” survey and obligatory fundraising card (We must note that it’s rather odd for an entrenched incumbent U.S. House member to undertake a statewide fundraising effort more than 17 months BEFORE the election):

  1. Well Obviously, this has struck me odd that you would claim that Barrett would be toast ,if he was to enter a race against McMaster and Harrell. But then again it does not surprise me. From a supporter who’s presidential race has spun out of control.

Let me ask you, If Gresham decides to run and he wins does that mean you will quit trying to predict future races or better yet maybe it may be good that you predict Hillary will win in 08 because you are way to far off on the toast accessment!

I believe if Gresham Barrett would be a viable candidate, and if he so chooses he can and will be your next Governor.

  2. I got my letter today. Sent it back with a check for $100. I have been involved at the grassroots of his organizationj and have grown to have a deep appreciation for his character. He is a conservative voice at the insane asylum we call Washington.
If he runs, he will win. I have been involved in SC polictics for about 11 years and don’t ever recall hearing the word “loved” in the same sentance as “Henry”. Don’t get me wrong..he’s a good AG (helped him too), but I don’t think his appeal is as broad as Gresham’s….time will tell
    UD from Aiken

  3. He will be toast…just because why again? Come one guys you are getting sloppy in your writing. He would be as viable a candidate as any other sitting office holder.

  4. Bobby who?

  5. Toast? That is rediculous.
I live outside of Barrett’s district and regularly hear people talk and get excited about him as the next Governor.
Harrell continues to show his lack of leadership in the House, especially compared to Wilkins.

  6. I guess the big question is which McCain supporter the guys behind this blog will support, McMaster or Harrell. I think Gresham can be the Columbia outsider, who unlike our current Columbia outsider, can work with the Legislature and get things done.

McMaster is the only one who’s proven he can win a statewide race and his stock isn’t exactly soaring these days (McCain collapse, losing high profile sex offender case)

  7. Please, you stupid people that rant amongst each other about presidential candidates are really getting old - grow up. Gresham Barret for Governor, while he would be good from a moral standpoint, it is very questionable that he could actually govern.

Ask the people of his district and see what he has acutally done to make things happen and talk to the folks in Oconee County, hell go to Westminster and see what a dying little town that is. I would think that Mr. Barrett would have to really get with it - he can’t even bring the pork home from Washington to save his hometown - how in the world do you people think he will be able to recruit and retain high level industry for this State of South Carolina. UD in Aiken - you would have been better off to send your $100 to a charity in Oconee County , SC.

Henry Mc is definately the most qualified attorney, AG, etc. and Henry could definate ly work with the General Assembly.

  8. Why assume a run for governor in 2010 when Lindsey Graham is so vulnerable in 2008?

  9. First of all I live in Gresham Gump’s Congressional District in Aiken as does UD. We are definitely NOT in the NW part of the state. Congressman Barrett is a nice man who is surrounded by idiots. He cannot govern as an executive. He lacks fortitude and determination as he has not demonstrated that as a legislator. That is for certain. And I though El Cid and the US Army taught you leadership skills. Henry McMaster will tear him a new one in any debate. Barrett sold his business and now his job is being a politician. He needs to stay in Congress and draw that GOVT cheese as long as he can and forget about the Governor’s race. Henry Mac is who we need as Governor. He will take no prisoners. Barrett has to consult with people before he excuses himself for the Men’s room.

  10. Gresham, if I can help, volunteer, or work in your office, please let me know, I’ll be glad to help. Helen Martin
