Less than a week after Thomas Ravenel, the former chairman of Rudy Giuliani’s South Carolina campaign, was indicted on federal cocaine trafficking charges, the Associated Press is reporting that his father Arthur has signed-on to the ex-mayor’s campaign. Ravenel, 80, a former state senator and South Carolina congressman, will serve as Giuliani’s state co-chairman.
The elder Ravenel will head the campaign in the Lowcountry.
This is sure to be a VERY controversial appointment and will once again have many people questioning Giuliani’s ability to select advisors. Let’s just say that replacing an embattled former state chairman with said chair’s father is not necessarily the wisest of decisions. So what happens when it’s time to choose a cabinet?

UPDATE: From the NY Observer’s Politicker blog:
… Ravanel’s tongue has gotten him in trouble in the past.
On October 18, 2006 The Post and Courier of Charleston, SC wrote ” Arthur Ravenel Jr., who is running for an East Cooper seat on the board, caught flack 16 years ago when he was in Congress and made a comment about white committee chairmen who operated on ‘black time,’ which he said meant fashionably late.”
As recently as January 2000, the Post and Courier reported in an article headlined “Ravenel stepped outside ‘civility,’” that Ravenel called the NAACP the “National Association For Retarded People.”
When asked about the comment in the story, Ravenel said that he misspoke. “It was a slip of the tongue. I have never said the NAACP was retarded,” he told the Post and Courier. “I made a rhetorical slip, and they want to lynch me for it.” [JASON HOROWITZ - New York Observer]

This is rich. Substituting a white supremacist father for a gay, cokehead son.
I love Republican family values.
In order for this to be “Republican family values” you would first have to consider Rudy a “republican”. Since he’s a baby killer among other things its safe to say hes not a Republican.
he looks like the father from “back to the future”
As a former resident of Mt Pleasant with family still in the area I keep track of South Carolina politics and happenings.
Thankfully for the citizens of the state, Rudy’s national campaign isn’t working all that well. Adding in the energy of this 80 year old won’t resurrect the campaign.
With the Republican Party no longer representing real conservatives, the best hope for real change and inprovement for this country probably rests with a potential bi-partisan leader like Barack Obama. Of course, the chances of South Carolinians voting for the best candidate versus the Republican Party is almost zero. The chances of South Carolina voting for a (half white) black man are below zero.
PLease, Rudy G is the only one that can lead this country forward, the rest of the field is there to keep people like you entertained and gives you something to talk about; with the exception of Huckleberry, now there’s a guy that calls it like he sees it!
What ever happeed to the concept of shame in our public life? Time was, when scandal hit, the family would go into seclusion and refuse public comment. Nowadays they just step up and take the opportunity to continue the bad behavior.
Nothing wrong with shame. We could only wish that more people in politics knew something about it.
Cousin Arthur has stepped in it this time. He will need the new bridge for a getaway route.
Yep… he has officially lost his mind. this is possibly the worst move that he could have made under the circumstances. Viva Rudy’s cluelessness!!
Honestly; trading a crack head for his cracked out bigot father? Hell Kerik would have been a better option
I love you guys for bringing wit and sanity to this situation. When I got this news today, I was beside myself. I told my sister that there is absolutely nothing these people won’t do. I am so glad someone understands.
There are a couple of questions, though: What does Guiliani want out of this seemingly dumb deal? (any publicity is good publicity?) What does an 80 year old want out of this deal? I don’t understand.

“Posted by Buffalo Joe”
Rudy is without question a Republican. For one, he is a partner in business with Bernie Kerik, who is currently negotiating a plea deal with the Feds. It is their partnership which made such a lucrative deal with the city of NY which resulted in the NYPD and NYFD unable to communicate with each other on 9/11.
And refuses to cut his ties with his good friend and priest — and child molestor.
And is a serial adulterer/divorcer, his montor in that regard being Newt Gingrich. Down to the deatils: Newt served divorce papers on his first wife while she was dying of cancer in a hospital bed. Rudy informed his most recent ex-wife that he was divorcing her via televised press conference, while his mistress stood at his side.
Guliani was running all over NY city on 9/11 not because he was being an “activist” “hero,” but because the Emergency Command Center was gone: despite the advice of experts, he had insisted it be installed in the WTC.
Abortion is not “baby killing” — except in the minds of the extreme right-wing lunatic fringe which views facts and science as Satan-inspired, thus reject their own “God”-given capacity for reason.
Romney is neither pro-life nor pro-choice; he is pro-getting elected, and will be whatever he perceives the voters want him to say.
Oh, yes: Rudy is a Republican. As is Romney.
Wow! Although I am realtively new to this web site and its “format” for discussing the issues of the day, I can already tell that I just don’t have enough rage in me to debate the rabid liberals who seem to frequent the message boards.
Funny, both conservatives and liberals have hung the boy out to dry before he has even been tried. I guess we should have known that T. R. would turn out bad given that his dad is a convicted “white supremacist.”

We’ve been meaning to get some sort of electric fence for that…
