UPDATE: It appears that WSMV has quietly backed-off their original report. Devious…

A source close to the campaign planning tells WSMV that that Thompson planned to announce his candidacy on the steps of the historic Fall School Building Tuesday, but Thompson campaign officials deny that Tuesday’s announcement is an official run for the White House. [WSMV-TV]

WSMV-TV Nashville has just broken the news that former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) will formally toss his hat in the ring in the GOP presidential race at a press conference scheduled for next Tuesday.

Thompson will also base his national campaign headquarters in Nashville, WSMV is reporting.

A source close to the campaign planning said the announcement will come this Tuesday, June 26, on the steps of the historic Fall School building. WSMV has confirmed that the Thompson campaign has obtained the lease for that building to turn it into a national campaign office headquarters.

“Everything’s in place for Tuesday,” the source said. “There are three major events built around his announcement.”

The source also told WSMV that Thompson will be in Nashville Tuesday for a series of meetings with his top advisers, and that those meetings will culminate with the announcement at the school building.

Thompson organization officials did not immediately return calls for comment.

The Fall School is Nashville’s oldest still-standing school building. It currently houses office space, including a local office for U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander. [WSMV-TV]

I guess this means that Freddies lobbying days, Senate career, skirt chasing and lack of accomplishments are all fair game now. I wonder how the media will treat him? Will they discuss his far right views that mirror the Presidents, disect his faith, his voting record? Will there emerge any former girl friends? Have all those old movies and episodes of Law and Order been shelved for now? After two terms of Bush, I hope this country has enough sense to elect someone with some relevant skills, not a former lobbyist and TV actor. The rest of world must think we’re nuts.

No wine before its time. Fred Thompson is smarter than a lot of people give him credit. He is a southern conservative, a voice of reason and up to the task. Ultimately, in 2008, we will have a choice of a conservative or a socialist. That for South Carolina, should be a no-brainer. Do we want socialist economics, higher taxes, gridlock in Congress, a totally messed up health care system or not. You can tell just how much a threat he is to the leftmost liberal wing , the attacks are already vicious. It is amazing the paucity of ideas presented from the left and the attempts to resurrect the Fairness Doctrine to muzzle conservative talk shows. Run Fred Run!

SC is getting behind this wonderful man who gives us straight talk, no meandering, lollygagging garble. He speaks with a cool confidence based principle, research and conservative values…REAL conservative values. And he does it all with the charm of a southern man. We have someone we can run now, someone who can win and lead our country back into greatness.
SC FredHeads, let’s get together behind our man… fredheadsc@gmail.com
