Presidential candidate Fred Thompson’s second-and-current wife Jeri, who is considered by some to be a “trophy wife,” was the topic of an interesting conversation on Friday’s Morning Joe radio talk show, which aired live on MSNBC. During a rather suggestive segment, Scarborough asked Congressional Quarterly writer Craig Crawford if Thompson’s wife, who is twenty-five years his junior, “works the pole.”

Here’s the video (transcript below):

SCARBOROUGH: Have you seen Fred Thompson’s wife?
CRAWFORD: Oh, yeah.
SCARBOROUGH: You think she, you think she works the pole?
CRAWFORD: That’s what a Hollywood career will do for you, I guess.
SCARBOROUGH: What do you mean?
CRAWFORD: You get wives like that.
SCARBOROUGH: I mean, look at that guy. God bless him, I love his voice. But I mean, you know. He ain’t Robert Redford in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”
CRAWFORD: Well I would like to see him back into politics because I think he’s a lousy actor.

We’re not exactly sure what Scarborough is suggesting - there are a few interpretations and we’ll leave those to you - but we are sure that MSNBC doesn’t need another Don Imus-like mess on their hands.

    Anyone who drank beer with his buddies in college knows what he meant. It is a phallic reference for goodness sake! I mean I think it is weird a girl that much younger than he is would want to be married to Thompson. But I wouldn’t talk about it on MSNBC and I wouldn’t make the sexual reference. Easy way to think about this::: What could be the other word that sounds like “Pole”?__Could it be “poll”?__
    What would presidential politics have to do with “polls”?___ could Joe be suggetsing that Thompsons wife helps his polling numbers?__I’m not so sure that’s such a far stretch to make___”work the poll”?__is this a term?___maybe jumping down his throat before it is discovered what it is he did say (pole/poll), is a better way to handle this.

    A) she looks like a stripper;
    B) she gives a superb handjob;
    C) Boy oh boy, she could suck a golf ball through a garden hose;
    D) She looks like a great lay;
    E) She has extensive experience installing cyclone fence;
    F) “Wichita Lineman”was in fact written about Fred Thompson’s wife;
    G) She beat the crap out of a guy named Stanislaus.

    If you don’t want to hear innuendo about trophy wives and philadering movie stars, the best way is to not marry a trophy wife and not philander. I think after all the sniffing around in the Clinton’s panty drawers, we need to learn about the other candidates sex lives, especially the ones that go to Liberty University and screech about “abstinence”.

    Actually, I think Scarborough is suggesting she is working the Hollywood system. She’s working the pole like some would work a corporate ladder, not the stripper pole. Still, if she’s a stripper someone out there will have nude photos of her and I expect we’ll see them soon!

    I am certainly not a prude and it would be hypocritical of me to remark on any man’s infidelities because of my own in the past. (Farther back than DeLay’s. If I weren’t an atheist I could go and repent and it would be like they never happened in the eyes of some God. That God may forgive but I’m still not sure if my wife does. She may forgive but not forget. 49 years last April.) If a woman dresses with everything showing except what she charges she will get snide comments. It’s her business but in the public eye you get them approvingly or the other kind. The pole.

    My 27-year-old mother lives in Tennessee and she says Thompson campaigned/dated country music star Lorrie Morgan, who was nothing but a slut! She said something about her being the other woman in a case among the CW stars, then she dumps male star after she breaks up marriage. Chris Matthews loves to sniff the Clinton’s underpants, but talking about Guiliani’s, Gingrich’s, and Thompson’s infidelities, marriages to much younger women is off limits. There seems to be a double standard on Hardball for Democrats and Republicans.

    Um, Scarborogh’s remark may be rude but to the point. She’s the trophy wife of a Hollywood actor running as a traditional-values conservative. I don’t think he married her for her piety and I’m sure she didn’t marry him for being the sexiest man on earth. The value of rude people like Scarborough (whom I generally hate) and Imus is that they will say the things that need to be said. Imus was getting dodgier and dodgier with age but he was at one time a brilliant satarist.

    But yeah. Let’s start throwing people off the air (the natural outcome for a “Don Imus-like mess) for making demeaning remarks seeing as human society has such an undoubted track record for distinguishing between legitimate criticism and genuine assholery.

    Dee,

    Scarborough said, “You think she works the poll?” Put that in any context you want and it’s still vulgar and rude.

    And he had no reason - especially knowing full well the inference that was to be made from his phrasing of the question - to bring Jeri Thompson into the discussion.
